WSF medical preferential loading program changes begin March 20, 2023

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Washington State Ferries (WSF) medical preferential loading program is being updated.

The medical preferential loading program gives an exemption from the “first-come, first-served” policy when a rider has a medical condition that an extended wait on the dock would cause detrimental risks to their health.

WSDOT is making changes to modernize the program and make it more efficient.

The changes will begin March 20, 2023, when the online program launches.

The changes include:

New online application process

  • Health care providers will submit an application for customers online.
  • Confirmation emails will be sent to both the health care provider and customer.
  • Customers will need a printed copy of the confirmation email, ID, or a minor’s guardians’ ID, when traveling.
  • Providers will no longer need to contact WSF for applications or fax them to terminals.

No more faxes

  • Faxed applications will no longer be accepted starting March 20, 2023.
  • 90-day grace period. Applications faxed before March 20 will be accepted through their expiration date, but not after June 18, 2023.

Other changes

  • Single-Day, Multi-Day (30), and Annual Preferential Loading options are available for qualified applicants.
  • Customers must show their IDs with the confirmation email to verify approval.
  • Confirmation emails will have directions for arriving at the terminal and renewing with their provider.
  • Only doctors, physicians, RNs, and affiliated positions with a professional license number may fill out and submit an application.
