If you have nursing loans, these programs may help with substantial savings. Your employer and type of loan will determine which opportunity is the best option.

Washington Nurse Educator Loan Repayment (NELR) Program

For nurse educators who teach and are faculty members for an approved nursing program.

  • "Nurse educator" is defined as an individual with an advanced nursing degree beyond a bachelor's degree.

Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program (NCLRP)

For registered nurses who work in underserved communities at critical shortage facilities. Applications are accepted once a year.

  • Registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, and nurse faculty may be eligible.
  • Pays up to 85% of unpaid nursing education debt. 
  • Accepted applicants must work for at least 2 years at a critical shortage facility or other appropriate locations in the United States.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF)

For nurses who work for federal, state, local, or tribal government organizations, non-profit organizations.

  • Full-time work or at least 30 hours per week
  • Can combine job hours if work at more than one location (all locations must qualify)
  • No contract employees (travelers) or employees of labor unions, political organizations

National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program

For licensed primary care clinicians that work for at least 2 years in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).

Federal Perkins Loan Cancellation

Full-time nurses who received Perkins loans before 2017 and have worked for 5 consecutive years in a healthcare professional-shortage area may be eligible.

Military Student Loan Forgiveness for Nurses

NHSC Rural Community Loan Repayment Program

For Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and Certified Nurse Midwives.

  • Working, or have accepted a position, at a rural NHSC-approved SUD treatment facility
  • A provider (or eligible to participate as a provider) in the Medicare, Medicaid, and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program
  • Fully trained and licensed to practice in the NHSC-eligible primary care medical, or mental/behavioral health discipline and state in which you are applying to serve

NHSC Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program

For Registered nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatric Nurse Specialists, and Certified Nurse Midwives

  • A provider (or eligible to participate as a provider) in the Medicare, Medicaid, and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, as appropriate
  • Fully trained and licensed to practice in the NHSC-eligible primary care medical, dental, or mental/behavioral health discipline and state in which you are applying to serve
  • Working at an NHSC-approved SUD treatment facility with a Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) score that would ordinarily be too low to qualify for NHSC funding
