The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in increased stress levels, especially in nurses. Stress, along with disruption in work structures, increases the risk for alcohol and drug misuse. Early recognition, reporting, and intervention are necessary to keep patients safe from harm and help colleagues recognize the need for support.
Prompt reporting of concerns serves as a safeguard to prevent patient harm, and will help the nurse to receive immediate attention and appropriate intervention. Once concerns have been reported it is important that action is taken immediately. This may include an investigation that reveals no concerns, identification of system problems, referral to an employee assistance program, or a report to the Nursing Commission.
Washington Health Professional Services (WHPS) is the Nursing Commission’s substance use disorder monitoring program. WHPS is available to provide consultation and education on substance use disorder, identification and intervention, and regulatory reporting requirements. Contact WHPS at 360-236-2880 or whps@doh.wa.gov.
